Wet belts run inside the engine oil. Hot oil slowly breaks the rubber down, the belt sheds and the debris blocks the oil pick-up. Left long enough it starves or snaps, and the engine is scrap.

Six signs your wet belt is on its way out
Any one of these on a wet belt engine is worth a phone call today, not next month.
Warning lights
The engine management light or low oil pressure light coming on. Belt debris in the oil pump strainer is a common cause.
Noise on start-up
Ticking, whining, grinding or rattling from the engine bay, especially cold or under acceleration, points to a fraying belt.
Rough running
Rough idle, misfires, hesitation or a clear loss of power. Timing drifting as the belt stretches.
Bits in the oil
Black specks or rubber particles in the oil filter or at an oil change. That is the belt shedding itself.
Oil leaks
Weeping around the timing cover area can mean the belt or its gaskets are failing.
Age or mileage
Over 6 years or 80,000 miles on a Ford, 5 years or 50,000 on a PureTech, and it has never been done. Get it checked.

How much does a wet belt replacement cost?
It depends on the engine and what the manufacturer specifies alongside the belt (oil pump belt, water pump, tensioners). Our prices are up to 50% below main dealer quotes using the same genuine parts. Send your reg and you’ll get a fixed written figure, usually within a couple of hours.
How long does it take?
Most cars are in at 9am and ready by 5pm the same day. Some vans and EcoBlue jobs can run into a second day, and we’ll tell you that up front when we quote.
When should a wet belt be changed?
Ford now advises 125,000 miles or 8 years. Peugeot and Citroën have cut the PureTech interval to 60,000 miles or 6 years. Because we see so many failing early, we recommend a check from 80,000 miles or 6 years on a Ford and 50,000 miles or 5 years on a PureTech.
Can you check it before I commit?
Yes. On PureTech engines we offer a free wet belt check with photos of the belt condition, so you can see what’s going on before deciding. On Fords we can inspect the belt and the oil pick-up and advise.
